The ratchet transforms a continuous rotary motion into an interrupted rotation  which goes step-by-step, and therefore it is also called stepped motion.

A pin is attached to the crankshaft and meshes with the ratchet. By each rotation of the crank the ratchet is moved one tooth. The ratchet has eight teeth, so eight rotations of the crank are needed for one rotation of the ratchet.
